METS QUICK TO THE PUNCH, OUTBID PHILS FOR STARLING MARTE!

By Sam Bush

The Phillies were rumored to have been interested in signing free agent outfielder Starling Marte to plug a big gap and surround MVP Bryce Harper with some talent.

If that was the case, the Phils are too late.

According to Jon Heyman on MLB Network, Marte has agreed to a four-year $78 million deal with the Mets pending a physical.

The Mets have dramatically overhauled their lineup in just one night with a trio of high-profile free agent sluggers in Marte, Mark Canha and Eduardo Escobar.

The 33-year-old veteran outfielder is coming off a 2021 in which he slashed .310/.383/.458 with 12 home runs and 47 stolen bases across 526 plate appearances with the Athletics and Marlins.
