PHILS HOMEGROWN TALENT: ONLY 2 GREAT CROPS IN 140 YEARS — SO THEY BETTER SCORE IN FREE AGENCY!
By Art Beitchman
Bryce Harper proclaimed after this past season that the Phillies need for their farm system to produce more homegrown talent.
Only they haven’t for many years.
Alec Bohm and Mickey Moniak have already proved they are not MLB-caliber.
The cupboard is still bare going into 2022.
Buying free agents is the only way to improve on this team’s hopes for next season, here are some on the shopping list:
Starling Marte CF–A’s
Nick Castellanos RF (above) –34 home runs–100 rbi’s–.309 BA Last season with Reds
Trevor Story SS–Dodgers
Corey Seager SS–Rockies
Aaron Loup LRP– Mets
The Phils have lots of work to do bolstering their chances for postseason play in 2022.
And for a team that has had only two great crops of players in 140 years — the early ’70s with the Schmidt, Bowa, Luzinski era and the 2000’s group with Rollins, Howard, and Utley — free agency is the only option to get better in the 2022 campaign.
